Free Tethered Jailbreak iOS 5.1 Using redsn0w. iPad 2 and iPhone 4S Not Compatible (Windows, Mac)

Dev Team just released redsn0w 0.9.10 beta 6, a new version of the free jailbreak tool that helps us to perform a tethered jailbreak on certain devices running iOS 5.1. Unfortunately iPad 2 and iPhone 4s are not included in the list of Apple devices compatible with this jailbreak tool but the rest devices that can run iOS 5.1 can be jailbroken using the latest version of redsn0w.

The new redsn0w make untethered jailbreak only on iPhone 3Gs with old bootrom and the iBooks application not working but everything else should work smoothly.

ultrasn0w is NOT compatible with iOS 5.1 so do not update even if you keep baseband because you will not be able to unlock the terminal.

redsn0w 0.9.10 beta 6 make jailbreak using bootrom exploit from limerain and is compatible with:

  • iPhone 3GS;
  • iPhone 4;
  • iPad 1;
  • iPod Touch 3G;
  • iPod Touch 4G;

Step 1: Download redsn0w beta 6 0.9.10.

Download iOS 5.1 from here.

 Step 2: Connect the terminal to the PC / Mac. In Windows, go to the folder where you downloaded redsn0w, right-click the executable, select Properties and from the menu go to Compatibility and check Run this program in compatibility mode for then select Windows XP, click Apply and then OK. If do not follow the steps correctly you will not be able to start the terminal in tethered. Mac / Windows redsn0w 0.9.10 beta 6, press the button Extras, Select IPSW and then select iOS 5.1 ipsw and click Next. redsn0w will implement the exploit and will move to the next step.

Step 3: After selecting the correct ipsw press the button Back to return to the main menu.

Step 4: Now you must enter the iPhone in DFU MODE. First close the terminal, then click Jailbreak and Next and redsn0w will show you how to put your iPhone in DFU Mode.

  • Press and hold the Power button for 3 seconds;
  • Press the Power button and Home button simultaneously for 10 seconds;
  • After passing the 10 seconds release the Power button, your iPhone should already be in DFU mode and redsn0w starts to implement the exploit;

If everything worked properly and the jailbreak was implemented then redsn0w should display the Finish button.

Step 5: If everything went well you should have a jailbroken iPhone but unfortunately "the fun part" does not stop here. Your terminal is jailbroken but the applications do not work because you have a tethered jailbreak. You should follow the steps below to boot in tethered mode in order to use Cydia, Safari or other applications.

Step 6: Reinsert the terminal in DFU mode by following the instructions in Step 4.

Step 7: If you have not closed redsn0w then click the Back button to return to the Jailbreak & Extras. If you closed redsn0w then resume the second part of Step 2 to select the ipsw for iOS 5.1.

Step 8: After selecting the ipsw press the button Just Boot from Extras menu and redsn0w will start the terminal in tethered and now you can use the device without the slightest problem.

After the terminal starts you should have access to all applications without any problem. This step should be repeated every single time when the terminal reset because otherwise it will not start at all. This free jailbreak solution is temporary, so if you do not want to bother with a tethered jailbreak it is better to wait for an untethered jailbreak solution.
