How to Downgrade iOS 6 to 5.1.1 in 4 Easy Steps

If you are not completely satisfied with the new iOS 6 and for various reasons (like the possibility to perform a jailbreak) you want to downgrade and return to iOS 5.1.1, then follow this step-by-step guide and reinstall the latest version (5.1.1) that can be jailbroken by Absinthe or Redsn0w.

Here’s how to downgrade iOS 6 to iOS 5.1.1

  1. Download the iOS 5.1.1 version for your device from here;
  2. Enter your device in DFU mode;
  3. Open iTunes, connect your device to the computer, if it is not already connected, hold down the Shift key or Option on Mac and click on the Restore button. Look for the .Ipsw file with iOS 5.1.1 downloaded in step 1 and click on Open;
  4. Wait for iTunes to complete the restore process, and now you should have a device running iOS 5.1.1;

If you receive errors:

  • 15 or 1015 - use Tiny Umbrella to remove your device from Recovery Mode;
  • 1600 or 1604 - use iReb to enter your device in Pwned DFU mode and continue from step 3;
  • 3194 - access the location c:windowssystem32driversetchosts and delete everything related to Apple ( gs.apple.com);
